Strum, Sing & Be Happy!
It is almost impossible to listen to or play the ukulele without smiling... this
fabulous little instrument has experienced a meteoric rise in popularity over the
past few years, becoming the fastest selling item in music shops across the country.
Nottingham is no exception and plays host to one of the county's biggest clubs for
Nottingham Ukulele Club has been running for five years and with a current membership
of over 100 ‘Ukers’ this friendly, fun-loving group, gathers every week to sing and
play the ukulele.
Nottingham Ukulele Club is run by Neil Marriott BEd (Hons. Music) who lives in Wilford
Village. Neil arranges all the music, which is projected onto a large screen for
the members to play from. The music Neil chooses comes from a wide variety of styles
and eras; and with such a broad range of playing abilities, Neil makes sure that
he includes some simple strum-along songs as well as a few that challenge the more
" Keeping everyone happy is quite a challenge" says Neil "but I try to keep a good
balance and so far it seems to be working, as the players keep coming back!"
But the Nottingham Ukulele Club is more than a place to sing, play music and learn
new skills; it has become like a second family to some.
Currently meeting at Emmanuel School Main Hall every Tuesday evening from 7-9pm,
Neil is looking for another venue in West Bridgford with a reasonable sized hall,
room to project the music and good parking (a quarter of our members travel over
10 miles to reach us). The club also meets every-other Tuesday afternoon in St.Wilfrid's

Playing for events around the region, including 'The Armed Forces Day' (Wollaton
Park), Nottingham City Council Light-Night, Local Churches, National Charities,
Indoor and Outdoor Events, Sing-a-longs, Friendship Groups, WI, Old-People's Homes
& Christmas Events.
Neil also offers private one-to-one Ukulele lessons and small group tuition for all
